Non-invasive genetic population survey of snow leopards (Panthera uncia) in Kangchenjunga and Shey Phoksundo National Park

CMDN, together with WWF-Nepal, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and Snow Leopard Conservancy, conducted a non-invasive population survey of snow leopard in Kanchenjunga and Shey Phoksundo area in 2010 using scat samples, making it Nepal's first wildlife genetic research. The study was able to identify four individual snow leopards in Shey Phoksundo (three female, one male) and five from Kanchenjunga area (three females, two males). The study was published in BMC Research Notes (2011). Following this study, CMDN, along with WWF-Nepal and the Hariyo Ban project, are conducting a population survey of snow leopards in the northern protected areas of the Nepali Himalaya, while a phylogenetic study of Nepal's snow leopards is in the pipeline.
